SHELBY WHIPPET BAND

The Shelby Whippet Band enjoys a rich history in the Shelby City Schools. A vital part of our students’ comprehensive music education, band is a co-curricular class which meets during the school day.

Shelby bands present a variety of musical offerings and styles, including current pop and rock tunes, oldies, television shows, and entertainment themes. Their performances are a result of many hours of work memorizing music, learning drills, and perfecting the many details which make our performance the best
it can be. The Shelby Whippet Band works hard throughout the year to prepare each performance for you and we appreciate your enthusiastic support throughout the year.

Please support the Shelby Band Parents who actively work to raise funds and promote the Shelby Whippet Band for students in grades 6-12. These funds go toward maintaining instruments, uniforms, music, and many other expenses related to the Shelby Band program. Thank you to the many individuals throughout the Shelby community who support the Shelby Whippet Band through monetary donations, issuing and maintaining uniforms, driving the band trailer, or any other need that may arise throughout the year.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Here are some FAQ’s about Shelby Whippet Band

A. A band director will come to talk to your classroom during May of your fifth grade year. Students begin lessons on their instrument during June.

A. Absolutely! Most of our new band members have never played an instrument. We will start you out on a new instrument and teach you how to play.

A. Boy, we are glad you asked this one. YES, Yes, Yes!!!! Not only can you be in sports and play in the band, we encourage you to get as involved in school as possible. We have students who play a variety of sports in band. The Shelby Whippet Band is made up of students in every activity possible! If someone tells you that you can’t be in something because of band, it is false!

A. Yes, it is true that we limit the number of certain instruments. This is due to what in the musical world is called, “Instrumentation”. In order to have a “balanced” band, it is not possible to have too many of certain instruments. For example a band with 5 trumpets, 2 clarinets and 37 drummers, probably wouldn’t be too balanced. In order to keep these numbers in check, we generally limit the number of Percussionists (drummers), Flute players and Saxophone players.
