Dear Shelby Families:
From the time this school year began on August 24th, it has been the goal of the Shelby City Schools to provide a safe environment for our students and staff so that face-to-face instruction can be provided to our students throughout the district; I want to thank you for your support and assistance to keep our students in school.
However, with the recent surge in COVID-19 cases in our area, the fact that Richland County is now designated as a level 4 purple county, and the Shelby City Health Department has issued recommendations related to these two indicators, the Shelby City Schools will act consistently and follow the recommendations of the Shelby City Health Department. As such, Shelby Schools will continue remote learning from December 7th-January 8th. Furthermore, all student activities, including athletic events and practices, are suspended immediately until further notice.
Monday, December 7- Tuesday, December 22
~ students will not report to school but they will be receiving instruction remotely/virtually
~ all staff will be reporting to work and teachers will be providing instruction remotely/virtually
Wednesday, December 23 – Monday, January 4 = Christmas Break = no instruction
Tuesday, January 5 – Friday, January 8
~ students will not report to school but they will be receiving instruction remotely/virtually
~ all staff will be reporting to work and teachers will be providing instruction remotely/virtually
Monday, January 11
~ Shelby City Schools tentatively plan to resume face-to-face instruction
During the time that the Shelby City School District is in remote learning mode, meals will be provided to all students. Please continue to sign up weekly for meal services. Meals will continue to be available at each school building and select group bus stops at designated times. The meal sign-up sheet is located on the district website and must be completed each Friday by noon.
Please know that by making this adjustment in our calendar from December 7th – January 8th, it is the hope of the Shelby City Schools that this change will allow our staff and students to continue face-to-face instruction in a healthy and safe manner beginning on January 11th. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this change in the school calendar may cause your family.
The plans in this letter, like many things in our society at this time, are subject to change and to that end, the Shelby City Schools will continue to work with the Shelby City Health Department to assess the current situation. Parents, you can be of assistance by reporting any household or student positive COVID cases to your child’s school, which will help us track our Covid-related numbers. Again, it is our goal to provide face-to-face instruction to our students but we must balance that objective while maintaining the focus of keeping our students and staff safe; thank you for your understanding.
Respectfully,
Tim Tarvin
Superintendent, Shelby City Schools
