Purple Designation

Dear Shelby Families:

When the Shelby City Schools learned last week that Richland County had been designated RED and that there was a significant possibility that Richland County might be designated PURPLE this week, Shelby Schools, like all school districts in Richland County, prepared to go to remote learning.

However, since the time of that decision the Shelby City Schools has learned that more information affecting our RED or PURPLE designation may come to light by the end of the week; therefore, we would like to clarify our instructional options moving forward.

First, if Richland County remains RED or less, it is business as usual for our school district. That is, students will continue to attend school five days a week in a face-to-face setting.

If the Governor, or the Ohio Department of Health, would designate the county as PURPLE and attach an order to that color designation saying school districts had to go to remote learning, we would be compelled to follow that order.  However, if no order is attached to that color designation, the Shelby City Schools may have a path to stay open with face-to-face instruction by working in conjunction with the Shelby City Health Department.

Unfortunately, we may not know our exact circumstances until Thursday afternoon or some time on Friday.  Therefore, if we become a PURPLE county (with or without orders attached) school will be closed on Friday, October 9, 2020, while we work to find a path to remain open with face-to-face instruction.  Expect an update on our school website or via social media prior to Monday, October 12th.

Again though, if we remain RED or less, our schools will be open on Friday for face-to-face instruction.
