Dear Shelby Families:
The flu season is always a challenging time for our schools and this year is no different with the news of the Coronavirus (COVID-19). Since all of the schools in the area could be affected, the superintendents throughout Richland County felt it important to communicate as one regarding what we are all doing on this effort. That starts with this letter.
Of immediate importance, please know that there are zero reports of the virus in any of the schools in Richland County. Moreover, according to Richland Public Health/Shelby Health Department, the “immediate health risk to the general American public is considered low at this time.” That is good news and we hope it stays that way.
Within our schools, we are taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of any infection or virus. In working closely with Richland Public Health/Shelby Health Department, we have asked our custodians, for example, to conduct extra cleanings of doorknobs and all other areas. Hand sanitizer is available throughout the buildings and in the classrooms. Everyone is encouraged to wash frequently.
While we hope that risk of the virus remains low in our area, should a more serious response arise regarding the virus, every Ohio district has available a calamity day plan for inclement weather and could exercise this option if needed for health reasons. We will do what we can, however, to keep our buildings sanitized and school in session as long as it is safe to do so.
In the meantime, here are a few ways to protect yourself and your family:
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick
• Stay home when sick
• Cough or sneeze into an elbow or use a tissue and place immediately in the trash
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces
